Performance Engineer

Job purpose/Position summary

Responsible for leading technical projects focused on increasing reliability and efficiency of energy collection systems, optimizing maintenance and operating practices, and reducing operations and maintenance costs.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Project management of wind turbine power performance measurements (scope, schedule, costs) which involves:
    • Test planning including contract review, technical analysis and documentation
    • Measurement equipment specification, procurement, preparation
    • Data monitoring and analysis to international standards and internal best practices
  • Review wind turbine generator (WTG) performance and recommend changes/improvements, along with optimizing associated ancillary equipment performance
  • Evaluate WTG-specific tests related to predictive and preventative maintenance, availability improvements, power curve efficiency, and the cost of operations and maintenance
  • Make recommendations involving development of and/or revisions to equipment operating procedures, system operating changes, design changes, and modifications to or replacement of plant equipment
  • Provide engineering services for troubleshooting and maintenance
  • Conduct engineering studies, investigations, and root cause analyses (RCAs); prepare oral and written reports
  • Support and promote employee technical training programs as required
  • Attend training programs relevant to the duties and responsibilities of this position as directed by the Company
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required


  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Aeronautical Engineering, or in another relevant discipline
  • 2+ years of experience in wind turbine commissioning, operations, maintenance and/or factory engineering department
  • MATLAB or similar programming experience preferred
  • Strong proficiency in use of Microsoft Office


  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals and schematics
  • Ability to work with databases
  • Ability to work well both as part of a team and independently
  • Ability to write clear and concise technical reports
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing

Location/Working conditions

Position is located in San Francisco, California or in Montana near wind farm sites

Works primarily in an office environment

May be required to work outdoors in harsh weather conditions

Position will require occasional travel (<20%)

Physical requirements

Must be able to climb stairs and ladders to ascend wind turbines

Must be able to walk on uneven terrain

Must be able to travel by car for up to six hours
