VP, Origination & Business Development

Job purpose/Position summary

  • Reporting directly to the CEO, the VP of Origination & Business Development will be responsible for:
  • Commercial power structuring and origination for the Company, both revenue contracts and reliability and ancillary products for NERC Registered Entities, including the Company’s two Balancing Authorities
  • Developing business opportunities that leverage NaturEner’s Energy Management Services platform
  • Overseeing the development of innovative energy storage technologies
  • Exploring options for the Company to join the Western Energy Imbalance Market and other emerging market initiatives
  • Representing the Company in the ongoing Capacity Market Restructuring development in Alberta

Duties and responsibilities

Power Structuring and Origination and Contract Negotiation

  • Identify RFP opportunities
  • Originate bilateral Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) targets outside formal RFP processes, as corporate PPAs
  • Source, structure, and negotiate innovative (disruptive) complex and highly structured energy sales transactions, including swaps, options, synthetic PPAs, etc., including optimization of collateral requirements
  • Negotiate and deliver cost efficient products and solutions to meet NaturEner’s compliance and commercial needs for the Company’s Balancing Authorities and wind integration services

Energy Management and Balancing Authority Services

  • Leverage the Company’s EMS and 24×7 Operations Center
  • Define NaturEner’s total Energy Service offering, value proposition and market positioning
  • Analyze and develop products and services offering, including turn-key wind integration and compliance services
  • Develop a detailed business plan in collaboration with the Executive Team that includes a Go-To-Market Strategy and Customer Acquisition Roadmap
  • Ensure services are clearly defined, scalable, sustainable, and meet budgetary objectives
  • Demonstrate and communicate a complete understanding of Energy Service technologies through an expert knowledge of building applications functionality, end-user operations, and customer requirements
  • Prospect for new opportunities; present projects for internal investment approvals
  • Manage contract negotiation, support implementation, and hand-off to Operations with support from many groups

Energy Storage Technologies

  • Draw upon knowledge of renewable power production intricacies, power flows, and grid dynamics to propose innovative energy storage solutions that deliver value to the Company, including energy arbitrage, wind integration, and reliability products
  • Stay involved and aware of commercial driving factors in the rapidly changing power market to stay ahead of the curve with energy storage deployment
  • Model energy storage devices and present these models for internal investment approvals

Market Design Initiatives

  • Represent the Company in Market Design Initiatives such as the Western Energy Imbalance Market (EIM) initiative, Alberta Electric System Operator’s (AESO) Capacity Market Restructuring development, etc.
  • Explore and assess the possibilities for the Company’s Balancing Authorities to join the Western EIM initiative and eventually lead the integration of the Company’s Balancing Authorities in the Western EIM
  • Represent the Company in the stakeholder process initiated by the AESO
  • Analyze implications for the Company’s operations, wind generation, and Balancing Authorities in WECC, wind generation in Alberta, and the Company’s transmission positions between Montana and Alberta
  • Optimize relationships with procurement, trading and origination desks at utilities, municipalities, cooperatives, commercial and industrial (C&I) off-takers, and marketers
  • Maintain active communication with others in the power generation business and, at times, conduct ongoing research to determine market dynamics

Team Management and Communications

  • Manage the Origination and Business Development team; provide direction and mentorship
  • Interface effectively with Development, Engineering, Operations and Project Finance teams
  • Support the Regulatory and Compliance teams to shape and maintain
  • n a strong understanding of the relevant regulatory landscape and to ensure both compliance and a robust market presence
  • Clearly and frequently communicate results to stakeholders within the Company


  • Master’s degree required; MBA degree strongly preferred
  • 10+ years of experience within the energy space in origination, structuring, finance or similar roles
  • 5+ years of business development experience, preferably within the Energy/Utility/Balancing Authority industry
  • 5+ years of management experience
  • Must have demonstrated ability to bring immediate value to a dynamic and growing organization
  • Must have experience with developing advanced pricing models, pricing derivatives, and risk management related to energy commodities
  • Balancing Authority experience and knowledge is required
  • Proven record of accomplishment, establishing industry relationships, delivering new business opportunities and valuable partnerships to the Company, and supporting the organization in providing value to the shareholders and financial stakeholders
  • Previous experience in PPA contract procurement and management, financial hedging structuring, balancing and reliability products procurement for Balancing Authorities, market design initiatives and financial modeling for renewable energy projects
  • Strong background in supporting term financing efforts, including tax equity financing
  • Demonstrable experience in designing, negotiating, and executing large structured transactions in the energy markets
  • In-depth knowledge of Regional Markets with particular focus on Western electricity markets in the Pacific Northwest
  • Expert with Microsoft Excel and strong proficiency with other MS Office products

Location/Working conditions

Position is based in San Francisco, California

Works primarily in a typical office environment

Travel up to 40%
