  • Balancing Authority Operator/Dispatcher

    Job Purpose/Position Summary

    Responsible for managing Balancing Authority (BA), Generator Owner (GO), and Generator Operator (GOP) operations, forecasting, scheduling, monitoring, and reporting real-time functions from NaturEner’s Operations Center (NOC). These functions are associated with the real-time operation of the Company’s balancing authorities, generation projects, and scheduling of third-party energy resources, while ensuring grid reliability and continuous compliance with all NERC and WECC BA, GO, and GOP reliability standard requirements.


    Duties and responsibilities

    • Serve as NaturEner’s representative for grid reliability of real-time Company BA, GO, and GOP Operations, and third-party energy resources from the Company’s 24/7 Operations Center
    • Maintain a formal log of real-time activities as defined by the Company
    • Monitor and operate the Company’s facilities, balancing authorities and generation projects in compliance with applicable NERC and WECC BA, GO, and GOP reliability standards, and adhering to Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) security measures
    • Follow Company protocols regarding the forecasting of energy production and BA control as appropriate to off-take arrangements
    • Schedule energy with counterparties as appropriate, utilizing electronic tagging (e­tagging) requirements
    • Purchase transmission through OASIS and implement associated energy e-tagging
    • Manage and purchase reserve positions and ancillary commercial products through bi­ lateral contracts, system interfaces/markets, and/or reserve sharing group (RSG)/ Regional Area Control Error (ACE) control arrangements
    • Operate generation projects to effectively fulfill commercial scheduling, operating, and transaction obligations
    • Serve as liaison between reliability entities and commercial partners to ensure proper balance and optimization of assets given reliability constraints
    • Support the operations, work clearances, substation activities, and maintenance activities by actively managing plant availability and reliability, coordinating outages and including use of the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system and logging
    • Ensure NaturEner’s logging and work safety procedures are followed and work site is safe for all employees, customers, subcontractors, and the public
    • Monitor, schedule, and manage Company switching operations and procedures
    • Perform third-party scheduling services for other generation projects
    • Accommodate the Company’s environmental protection activities in conjunction with managing Control Performance Standards
    • Support reporting/settlement duties for the Company’s generation projects and third­party generation operations projects, as requested
    • Successfully complete training related to defined Company-specific job tasks and NERC training as required by NERC PER-005
    • Maintain NERC System Operator Certification (Balancing and Interchange Operator or Reliability Operator) at all times
    • Complete continuing education hours required to maintain NERC System Operator Certification
    • Take appropriate actions as needed during routine and emergency operations to ensure the reliability of the BA areas including those actions necessary to address operating emergencies, to alleviate capacity and energy emergencies, and to support the reliability of the Bulk Electric System
    • Perform special assignments and additional duties as requested
    • Qualifications
      • Bachelor’s degree in energy/environmental studies, economics, business, finance, electrical engineering, or other relevant degree and/or successful experience as a System Operator or supervisor in a BA, or equivalent combination of education and additional experience
      • Current NERC System Operator Certification required (Balancing and Interchange Operator or Reliability Operator)
      • Experience as a Power System Operator with a proven ability to excel at the role and responsibilities of a System Operator
      • 3+ years of BAA experience including Energy Management System (EMS) experience in a BA environment preferred
      • Must be willing to work in a 24-hour operations environment with flexible work scheduling
      • Must be adaptable to change

      • Wind generation experience strongly desired

  • Business Development Manager – Energy Management Services


    Job purpose/Position summary

    Responsible for developing business opportunities that leverage NaturEner’s energy management services platform including building the market, defining the offering, and attracting and signing new clients for energy management services (i.e., Balancing Authority, GO/GOP, Wind and Solar Generation Forecasting, Site Monitoring, and Remote Operations management services).

    Duties and responsibilities

    • Define NaturEner’s total Energy Service offering, value proposition and market positioning
    • Develop a detailed business plan in collaboration with the Executive Team that includes a Go To Market Strategy and Customer Acquisition Roadmap
    • Prospect for new opportunities and/or progress existing development projects, manage contract negotiation, support implementation, and hand-off to Operations with support from many groups
    • Assist with presenting projects for internal investment approvals
    • Identify renewable energy and related business opportunities which includes maintaining active communication with others in the power generation business and, at times, conducting ongoing research to determine market dynamics
    • Determine project economics and technical characteristics in conjunction with other departments

  • Performance Engineer


    Job purpose/Position summary

    Responsible for leading technical projects focused on increasing reliability and efficiency of energy collection systems, optimizing maintenance and operating practices, and reducing operations and maintenance costs.

    Duties and responsibilities

    • Project management of wind turbine power performance measurements (scope, schedule, costs) which involves:
      • Test planning including contract review, technical analysis and documentation
      • Measurement equipment specification, procurement, preparation
      • Data monitoring and analysis to international standards and internal best practices
    • Review wind turbine generator (WTG) performance and recommend changes/improvements, along with optimizing associated ancillary equipment performance
    • Evaluate WTG-specific tests related to predictive and preventative maintenance, availability improvements, power curve efficiency, and the cost of operations and maintenance
    • Make recommendations involving development of and/or revisions to equipment operating procedures, system operating changes, design changes, and modifications to or replacement of plant equipment

  • Project Manager – Wild Rose


    Job purpose/Position summary

    Responsible for developing and managing project plans, detailed project schedules, and project control functions of NaturEner’s Wild Rose renewable energy projects in Canada through all phases of the project life cycle including development, financing, competitive bidding, contract negotiation, engineering, procurement, construction and other critical path milestones; and for monitoring and controlling projects to achieve project objectives within constraints including scope, schedule, quality, budget and risk management.

    Duties and responsibilities

    • Work closely with the Wild Rose Project Team to develop project plans based on objectives, requirements and constraints; define project milestones, critical path items and project milestone inter-dependencies; develop and manage detailed project schedules including tracking and updating project schedules to adjust for changes in scope, cost and existing conditions
    • Prepare submissions/bids into the Alberta Renewable Electricity Program procurement process, including the Expression of Interest (EOI), Request for Qualifications (RFQ) and Request for Proposals (RFP) stages; may also be responsible for managing projects elsewhere in North America
    • Schedule and manage regularly scheduled Project Team meetings with the internal Project Team and any external consultants as necessary, including the development and management of a project “dashboard” to track and manage critical project tasks, inputs, and changes to the project schedule, and the delivery and responsibility/accountability of projects tasks
    • Interface directly with internal team members and discipline leads including Development, Engineering & Construction, Legal, Commercial, Finance, Accounting, Operations and the Company’s Senior Executive Team
    • Communicate the status of project schedules and project-related requirements to the Senior Executive Team on a regular basis
    • Provide timely and accurate monitoring, prediction, control and reporting of the work that was scheduled to be done, the work that has been done in a reporting period and to date, and the work required to be done for project completion
    • Prepare schedule projections and provide timely notice to the Project Team for each kind of deviation and/or key issues that could affect the critical path schedule
    • Identify “slippages” early and actively manage them to bring the schedule back on track
    • Subdivide larger schedules into more detailed, phased tasks and sub-projects for ease of management review and oversight
    • Consult with Project Team on issues and matters related to project control, expenditures, forecasts, and cost estimates for new and authorized work
    • Prepare monthly analyses and reports on expenditures, progress, commitments, budget performance and schedule performance for the projects
    • Develop a Project Team organizational chart, including definitions of Project Team members’ roles and responsibilities
    • Manage the preparation of the RFP/RFQ response submission in collaboration with the Project Team including the coordination of the preparation and management of bid documents, and ensure appropriate input is received on time by Project Team members
    • Develop a project risk register and risk mitigation management plan
    • Support project developers in developing the project and provide risk management assistance to secure power-off take arrangements, financing agreements, equity acquisition agreements, and requests for proposals (RFPs) related to the projects/sites for which the developer is responsible
    • Work in partnership with Project Team to assure a seamless transition of projects into the construction phase
    • Maintain up-to-date documentation and organization of data/information pertaining to NaturEner’s developing assets
    • Act as the liaison for all relevant NaturEner departments to ensure information related to NaturEner’s developing assets is communicated clearly and effectively
    • Provide support for Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractor Request for Bids process, bid preparation, bid and document management, and contract negotiations
    • Assist with the ongoing management of competitive analysis efforts in competitive bid processes

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Engineering, Economics or a related field
    • Project Management Professional (PMP) or Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) designation preferred
    • 10+ years of project management, project administration or project controls experience, preferably in the area of power generation or large energy infrastructure projects
    • Experience developing and executing complex project schedules utilizing state-of-the art scheduling tools
    • Experience developing and managing project plans with multiple stakeholders
    • Experience implementing controls to track and monitor projects
    • Experience handling time-sensitive tasks and meeting deadlines; outstanding time management capabilities
    • Experience managing competitive bid processes in the United States and Canada, especially in Alberta, is desired
    • Experience with commercial contract administration is desired

  • Wind Engineer


    Job purpose/Position summary

    Responsible for managing and analyzing wind assessment resources, designing and validating wind farm layouts, conducting wind resource assessments to calculate long-term wind farm net capacity factors, determining optimal meteorological tower locations and configurations, creating monthly reports using onsite and reference stations’ recorded wind data, and contracting independent wind consulting services to perform wind farm energy production assessments, site suitability analysis, and wind turbine power performance tests.

    Duties and responsibilities

    • Manage meteorological campaigns, which includes determining the optimal number of met towers, their locations, and their configuration (sensor heights and orientations) for a given wind farm site
    • Ensure that wind data files are received on a daily basis from all met towers using NRG Systems software
    • Identify and document measurement errors and malfunctioning sensors using Symphonie Data Retriever, Windographer and WAsP software, and schedule any tower maintenance to be performed
    • Request and supervise quotes for tower installation and maintenance
    • Identify and validate meteorological data from Weather Stations in the area of the Projects (Reference Stations) to establish long term correlations
    • Coordinate with wind farm site mangers and land owners to schedule tower installation and/or removal
    • Create monthly reports using onsite and Reference Stations’ recorded wind data, including meteorological tower data reports (one for each tower) using Symphonie Data Retriever, Windographer and WAsP to determine the site conditions such as mean wind speed, prevailing wind direction, wind shear, turbulence intensity, expected long-term wind speed at different heights, air density, temperature, and extreme wind speeds
    • Create monthly wind farm energy production reports (one for each wind farm) using WindPRO, including wind speed and wind energy distributions, long-term hub-height mean wind speeds, long-term energy production estimates, energy losses, and diurnal and seasonal energy production patterns
    • Conduct wind resource assessments including quality-checking and removal of erroneous data recorded by met towers, performing onsite and offsite correlations and shear analysis to calculate long-term hub-height wind speed distributions at each met tower, running WindPro software to calculate long-term wind farm gross energy production, and quantifying energy losses to calculate long-term wind farm net capacity factors
    • Design wind farm layouts using WindPro or WAsP and mapping software/hardware applications (GPS devices, Global Mapper, and Google Earth), taking into account wind resource, land ownership, topography, and environmental issues (houses, utilities, sensitive habitats, water bodies) to determine areas available for construction
    • Use slope limit guidelines to determine terrain which is too steep for construction
    • Use wind turbine manufacturers’ guidelines and onsite measured wind rose to determine minimum turbine spacing and row orientation in order to minimize wake
    • Perform noise impact assessment and visual simulation
    • Choose turbine locations that maximize energy production and minimize roads and underground collector cable lengths
    • Validate the wind farm layout design by means of onsite visits
    • Execute and handle contracts for independent wind consulting services to perform wind farm energy production assessments, site suitability analysis, wind turbine power performance tests, and analysis of onsite SODAR data and regional wind maps

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Atmospheric Sciences preferred
    • 2+ years of experience in wind engineering or related field
    • Basic knowledge of fluid dynamics principles

    • Identify RFP opportunities

    • Explore and assess the possibilities for the Company’s Balancing Authorities to join the Western EIM initiative and eventually lead the integration of the Company’s Balancing Authorities in the Western EIM
    • Represent the Company in the stakeholder process initiated by the AESO
    • Analyze implications for the Company’s operations, wind generation, and Balancing Authorities in WECC, wind generation in Alberta, and the Company’s transmission positions between Montana and Alberta
    • Optimize relationships with procurement, trading and origination desks at utilities, municipalities, cooperatives, commercial and industrial (C&I) off-takers, and marketers
    • Maintain active communication with others in the power generation business and, at times, conduct ongoing research to determine market dynamics

    • 5+ years of business development experience, preferably within the Energy/Utility/Balancing Authority industry
    • 5+ years of management experience
    • Must have demonstrated ability to bring immediate value to a dynamic and growing organization
    • Must have experience with developing advanced pricing models, pricing derivatives, and risk management related to energy commodities
    • Balancing Authority experience and knowledge is required
    • Proven record of accomplishment, establishing industry relationships, delivering new business opportunities and valuable partnerships to the Company, and supporting the organization in providing value to the shareholders and financial stakeholders
    • Previous experience in PPA contract procurement and management, financial hedging structuring, balancing and reliability products procurement for Balancing Authorities, market design initiatives and financial modeling for renewable energy projects
    • Strong background in supporting term financing efforts, including tax equity financing
    • Demonstrable experience in designing, negotiating, and executing large structured transactions in the energy markets
    • In-depth knowledge of Regional Markets with particular focus on Western electricity markets in the Pacific Northwest
    • Expert with Microsoft Excel and strong proficiency with other MS Office products
    • Serious commitment to accuracy and quality while meeting goals and deadlines; relentless attention to detail
