Associate System Operator

Job purpose/Position Summary

Responsible for managing Balancing Authority (BA), Generator Owner (GO), and Generator Operator (GOP) operations, forecasting, scheduling, monitoring, and reporting real-time functions from BHE Montana’s Network Operations Center (NOC). Construction Manager

Job purpose/Position Summary

The Construction Manager plans, budgets and directs short and long-term electrical generating plant construction, including renewables, and related transmission facilities, in a manner that is safe, cost effective, and timely. Projects may involve multiple site locations and involve millions in expenditure level. Supports all construction activities associated with new and existing generation projects. Supports project budget updates, direct oversight of contractors and consultants which support site development and construction activities throughout the projects’ lifecycle.  Administers the associated contracts, ensures site compliance with environmental and other permits, regulatory requirements, safety requirements, and quality of the development and construction. This position maintains key business, public and stakeholder relationships and includes interaction with landowners, local, state and government employees, engineers, contractors, consultants, and other stakeholders. Coordinates with other departments to complete development and construction tasks.

Primary Duties and responsibilities

Develops project construction plans, budgets and schedules.  Provides direction and coordinates project activities associated with capital investments for construction of new utility scale electric generating facilities, including renewables and related transmission facilities.

Provides technical construction expertise and reviews the design drawings for solar, battery storage or natural gas generating facilities, and for substation and transmission line projects for constructability.

Monitors, inspects, and accepts construction work done by outside contractors. Oversees site construction activities including contractor performance relative to schedule, quality, safety and compliance. Provides direction to contractor as assigned. Monitors and reports on performance related to safety, compliance, budget, schedule and quality for all site development and construction activity.

Coordinates project-related efforts with project managers, project engineers, operations and other departments and government agencies. Reviews contractors work schedules to make sure contract construction work is completed in accordance with Company imposed deadlines. Reviews and approves contractor’s monthly invoices for payment.

Utilizes knowledge of OSHA standards to provide input for project safety.  Complies with Company  safety operating policies and procedures to effectively complete work assignments.  Ensures project compliance with regulatory bodies including spill response, environmental air monitoring and environmental compliance reporting.  Conducts daily coordination meetings, and weekly progress meetings, and prepares weekly summary progress report for significant construction projects.

Manages construction contracts and negotiates change orders for work changes in the scope of work. Maintains a daily log of the contractor’s construction activities and prepares a weekly activity report of construction progress. Maintains and reviews project budgets and schedules.

Coordinates the project activities with other projects, planned outages, and plant operations and maintenance departments. Negotiates critical issues with internal and external stakeholders to ensure project success. Drives and assures transactions are appropriately fed through the internal evaluation and approval process (structuring/pricing, accounting, legal, and senior management).

Perform any additional responsibilities, represent, and promote Company programs, products, and services within the community and participate in special projects as requested or assigned.

Position Requirements

Project Engineer

Job purpose/Position Summary

The Project Engineer completes technical work and directs others in the planning, designing, development, procurement and construction of electric generation projects, and additions, changes, or maintenance to projects. The position directs, coordinates, and exercises functional authority for planning, organization, control, integration, and completion of engineering projects of moderate size and complexity. Accountable for project engineering decisions as Owners Engineer or oversees contractors who provide Owners Engineering on projects. Review engineering design completed by design engineers and engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractors to assure the design meets the project requirements. Provide and manage technical support for capital projects from conceptual development to completion. This position will be focused on optimizing overall operations by supporting operations and maintenance activities with excellence, accountability, and best practice-based solutions.

Primary Duties and responsibilities

Supports engineering services for the planning, design and construction of electric substations, battery, solar, wind and natural gas generation, and for transmission interconnections.  Conducts electrical engineering studies and investigations and prepares oral and written reports. Works as a liaison to coordinate the planning, design, and construction of new electric generation equipment with key stakeholders.

Manages outside engineering services to accomplish the assigned work. Reviews engineering studies, plans, specifications, calculations, evaluations, design package from EPC contractors for compliance with engineering principles, company standards, and contract requirements and specifications.

Supports project management with the scheduling, design, estimates, engineering specifications, drawings, materials procurement, construction contracts, cost tracking and project cost projections. May manage multiple electrical contractors on a project site to support planned and unplanned maintenance, and new construction. Provides technical input to assist in the development of project planning.

Tracks and manages required maintenance and testing for existing electrical equipment at substations and for battery, solar, wind or natural gas generation facilities.  Monitor and ensure regulatory compliance inspections, testing, and documentation are conducted in accordance with established procedures, standards, and protocols, and the applicable compliance reporting is accurate and submitted on time.

Supports Asset Management in the performance of regular and systematic operational and compliance audits and assessments to ensure the compliance record is always complete and audit ready. Ensure the timeliness and accuracy of monthly operation reports.

Develop detailed design specifications and prepare bid packages for external engineering services and similar contracts to support the needs of the business.

Responsible for overseeing the specification, design, and maintenance of electrical equipment such as transformers, breakers, and protective relays. Oversee installation, inspection, and commissioning of new equipment.

Conduct site inspections to ensure adherence to engineering standards.  Review and evaluate equipment performance, analyze tests performed by operations and maintenance teams for compliance with engineering principles, company standards and compliance standards (FERC, NERC, WECC). Support the preparation of annual production, revenue, and expense budgets and related analyses. Support Asset Management by tracking and explaining variances to the budget and create recurring reports on project performance for management review.

Support the Request for Information (RFI) and Request for Quote (RFQ) Request for Proposal (RFP), and the authorization for expenditures (AFE) request process.

Provides engineering assistance to other departments and technical leadership to staff and recommends alternative solutions to management in area of specialty on engineering solutions to meet business needs. Interface with wind farm staff and the BA (Balancing Authority) Operations Center staff to identify and execute opportunities to improve the operational and commercial performance of operating assets. Wind Farm Technician

Job purpose/Position Summary

The Wind Farm Technician must have a working knowledge of operation and maintenance work on wind turbine generators and balance of plant equipment including preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, and modifications. The Wind Farm Technician is also responsible for identifying and reporting safety issues and ensuring that all safety and health requirements are followed. This position will work closely with various contractors on site, overseeing their work, reviewing work orders, observing safety culture, and making improvement recommendations.

  • Job is located at the wind farms in Kevin and Ethridge, Montana
  • 10% Office/90% Field

Physical requirements

  • Must be able to climb a wind turbine generator and follow boundary limits and required safety PPE when working around high voltage electrical equipment.
  • Must be able to work outside in various weather conditions, i.e., cold temperatures, snow, rain, and heat.
  • Must be able to lift up to 35 lbs.
  • Must be able to travel.
  • Must have valid driver’s license.
